The Fall

We had a person in a position of authority where I worked who made the lives of everyone miserable. He was arrogant, rude and sexist. He treated people with contempt. He was never wrong, it was always someone else's fault. The Board of Directors finally wised up and fired him.

This man was especially contemptuous of my female boss, a woman who has been there for 25 years and knows how things should be run. He kept trying to undermine her authority and micro manage her division without knowing what he was doing. I had to deal with him occasionally and he always made me feel uncomfortable because he would leer at my breasts. I dress modestly but I'm stacked like Dolly Parton. I don't like being leered at.

What arrogant people don't seem to realize is that there will be a fall. You can not treat people with contempt. What goes around comes around. My ex found that out when both of his wives left him. He lost the respect of his only child. He can not keep a job. Once you start on the road of arrogance you are going to find that others will attack you. It may be done as an anonymous troll, it may be done as a whispering campaign against you, it may be done in many ways.

It takes wisdom to stop and look and see how people perceive you and modify your behavior if you see that you are being treated with no respect. Everyone has the right to be treated with respect however if you yourself fail to treat others with respect then you have no right to complain if you are targeted. Egos need to be kept in check. Humility is a virtue that needs to be nurtured. If you are good at what you do let others sing your praises. If people don't like you then you need to take a good look at yourself and see why. It is folly to assume that it is only because they are jealous of your superior abilities. A superior attitude is often used to hide an inferior heart.

If it is true that pride goes before a fall (which is true, of course), all I have to say is this...

May Pamela Britton and Mary Katherine Ham have appropriate landings.
